Rebbe Nachman of Breslov (4 sessions):

Rebbe Nachman of Breslov is probably the best known disciple of the Baal Shem Tov (the founder of Chassidism).  Retrospectively diagnosed as a clear manic-depressive, Rebbe Nachman’s writings embody the spirit of Chassidism in his relentless attempt to fill his life with joy and holiness.  These 4 sessions will explore some of his most heartfelt and most wonderful writings, teachings, and practices.

External Influences on Judaism (3 sets of 4 sessions):

If we look carefully at the cultures surrounding Judaism, we can easily see “outside” influences in essentially every stage of Jewish development.  These sessions give participants the chance to see Judaism in the context of the world around it, and to ask themselves what influence they want the world around them to have on their Judaism:

Biblical Times:

(1)         Flood stories and Creation Myths—Mesopotamian Influences

(2)         Monotheism and Other Trivialities—Core Jewish Concepts that May Not Have Been Jewish After All.

(3)         Why do Jews Keep Kosher—Influences of the Ancient Near-East

(4)         Rabbis, Synagogues, and a New Calendar—Babylonian Influences

Rabbinic Times:

(5)         Assimilation & Zealotry—Jewish Life in Ancient Greece

(6)         To Respect or Fight the Government—Jewish Life in Ancient Rome

(7)         Law or Faith—Early Rabbis and Early Christians

(8)         What Do Jews Believe—Islam’s Influence on Judaism

Modern Times:

(9)         Parchment & The Printing Press—Technology & Judaism

(10)     Nationalism—Is Judaism a Religion or a People?

(11)     Protestant Christianity—Foundation of Denominational Judaism

(12)     The American Dream—American Influences on American Jews

The following Courses are Best Offered as
